The beginning of the end.

Chapter 16

2 Kings 17-19
Isaiah 3, 6, 13-14, 49, 53

Here’s a challenge: try memorizing 2 Timothy 3:16-17.

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Tim. 3:16-17)

It might take some practice to memorize these verses, but they are important.

In 2 Kings, the story of Israel isn’t ideal. It seems like no matter what is happening, even if God is giving a warning or direction to follow, Israel still chooses to sin against God. Remember, this is the God who brought Israel out of Egypt, captivity and slavery under Pharaoh. God promised a land with everything that Israel would ever need, they just needed to follow His law. If they listened to what God was saying, they would have the opportunity to be connected to Him.

But Israel didn’t listen. Instead they sought after other gods, did wicked things that made God angry, and worshipped Idols even through God said specifically in his commandments: “You shall not do this.”

Let’s make some connections. God kept trying to speak to Israel: “Turn from your evil ways. Observe my commands and decrees.” But they would not listen. The Bible literally calls them a “stiff-necked”, stubborn and selfish people. (2 Kings 17-19)

God continued to give his Word, his commands and laws, and his plan for Israel, but they would not listen.

Let’s refer back to the memory verse from earlier:

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

  • "All Scripture is God breathed…”

God spoke to Israel; God is still speaking to us today! The Bible is His breathed-out word, speaking truth into the life that each of us is living.

  • “…useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness…”

His words, as they were for Israel, show us what living according to God’s direction looks like. They positively lead us forward while connecting us in a deep relationship with the Creator!

  • “…so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

When we follow His Word, we are equipped for every good work in our world!

God is speaking.

I think, then, that each of us has a choice: We can live like Israel, and not listen to God’s Word, or we can open our hearts, minds and ears to the guiding light of God’s Word given to us.

As you study the Bible, know this: what you are reading carries an eternity of importance in your lives and the lives of others. Keep reading and listening! God’s Word will continue to speak to you and show you his grace and love through Jesus Christ.
