God’s messengers.
Chapter 15
1 Kings 17-19
2 Kings 2, 4, 6
Hosea 4-5, 8-9, 14
Amos 1, 3-5, 9
When I was in 11th grade, my mom stopped me after school to talk. The topic? The future. She asked about what I wanted to do with my life, where I wanted to go to college, etc.
I had just had a visit from a man named Pao who was a recruiter for a very small college in Michigan. I knew about Reformed Bible College because I had been there growing up. But something about this visit was different. No, it wasn’t the awesome recruiter, the super cool brochures he had or the stories he told. It was something else. It took me some time to figure it out, but it was the Spirit’s presence in that moment, moving in my heart, and affirming this plan that caused me to pause.
Come-on now: dinky college, no sports, not a state school… really God? Here? A Bible School?
Yes, and God affirmed it over and over again. He was directing me to the right place to live out His calling on my life. God gave me direction, and I chose to listen to what he said.
Have you ever felt God directing, or telling you to do something in your life?
Did you listen and follow what he said?
Elijah was a man chosen by God to deliver God’s word to the world around him. This job was important! Sometimes it was filled with encouraging and positive words. Other times, though, the word from the Lord that Elijah was told to share was difficult.
One of those people who got bad news from Elijah was King Ahab. Ahab was a bad man. His biggest problem was that he worshiped created gods, like one named baal, instead of the one true God.
One day, Elijah shared God’s word with King Ahab saying there would be a drought in the land over the coming years. Ahab was furious! He was so mad at Elijah that he was going to kill him!
But God had more planned for Elijah’s life. Elijah had a part to play in God’s work here on earth. God gave instruction to Elijah to run away from Ahab into the desert so that he wouldn’t get killed. In this command, God promised to feed Elijah by sending Ravens with meat and bread twice a day, and that he would have water to drink from the river that he would hide by. God directed and Elijah Listened.
Do you think that God gives direction in your life today? If so, where does this direction come from?
Elijah listening to God’s direction is a great example for us. Did you know that God gives you direction on how to live and what to do in your life? Did you know that, if you’re a follower of Jesus Christ, that you have a part in God’s big plan here on earth?
Ok, How do you find this direction? By getting into God’s Word. You need to read the Bible!
In the book of Joshua, God reminds us of the importance of his Word: “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” (Joshua 1:8)
If you’re wondering what to do, have a big decision to make, or just want to live for God but aren’t sure how, the best place to start is in Scripture. It’s there that you can find God’s direction, your purpose and a path to follow for each day of your life!
