The beginning of life.

Chapter 1

Genesis 1-4, 6-9

I love creating things. There is something fun about putting pieces of wood together with some nails, glue, and using tools to make my dream become a reality. I’ll be honest, it doesn’t always end up looking how I want it to. But no matter what, I made it. It’s my hard work with my hands coming to life right in front of me.

Have you ever created something? Maybe you’ve painted a picture, working hard to get the brush strokes and colors in just the right place. Perhaps it was a song and you added notes in a certain order to make it sound relaxing, jazzy, or like a rock song. Creating is fun, and it can be satisfying.

There are times where what we create gets destroyed. Maybe by a sibling, or a friend, or a coworker. In those moments how does your heart feel and how would you describe it? What would it feel like if what you created was ruined? Would you be mad at the person that ruined it? Would you want revenge?

In Genesis chapters 1-3, God created something perfect. He takes his time over six days to put everything in just the right place, creating the world that we live in. On the sixth day, the best part of his creation was made: humans, people like you and me! We were made in God’s Image.

All of creation, especially humankind, was created very good. But then, something happened. The perfection of the world gets ruined. Adam and Eve, the people God made, chose to not follow his rules and, by sinning, disconnected all of creation from the Creator.

How do you think God felt after this happened?

God’s response was different than what you might think. He didn’t look at Adam and Eve and say, “I never want to see you again.” He didn’t say to His Creation, “This is all worthless now. I’m getting rid of it and starting over again. Back to day one.” Instead, God shows grace and love. He chases after what he has created! He does this for much longer than what we read in Genesis. In fact, he is even doing this today. For you, for me, for those stuck in sin, God wants to be reconnected with his perfect creation.

Why would God keep pursuing his people after sin destroyed his perfect creation? Why would God chase after us when we continue to sin against Him now?

This story tells us a lot about who God is. He is a creator, he wants to be connected with his creation, and he loves what he created. Especially you and me. This love is so deep that, even today, God wants to have a relationship with us.

This is just the beginning of our journey through the Bible. You will read so much more about God, His people, Jesus the Savior, and where we fit into God’s plan as you keep reading His Word.
