The hour of darkness.
Chapter 26
Matthew 26-27
Mark 14-15
Luke 22-23
John 13-14, 16-19
Why does it matter that Jesus is fully human and fully God? Without this truth, the most important sacrifice happen. We are at the climax of our story. This chapter and the next are the most important moments in all of Biblical and world History!
Open your Bible and take a few moments to read Mark 15:21-41. Then we will answer the question at the beginning, jumping into the deep end of the Gospel.
Jesus was not a man of parlor tricks and wise sayings, he was infinitely more than that! Jesus was a man and he was fully God! From the moment he arrived here on earth, he had a mission and it was this: to glorify God by saving all people. He would save all of us from our sins.
Let’s quick talk about Sin: since it entered the world, sin and Satan have relentlessly worked to do one thing. Here’s an easy to remember what sin does: Sin Separates. Sin separates us from God. Because we are sinful, we aren’t able to be in the presence of God. Why? Because he is perfect and we are not. That means that, for all eternity, every sinful person would face death, separated from the Father. How can our sins be forgiven? Someone would have pay the price in our place.
This is what Jesus did. Jesus took humanity’s punishment for sin on himself. He has to be human for this reason. Jesus physically died, suffered death and separation from God because this is the penalty for our sin. Only a human being could experience and pay for this punishment. But how can one man, Jesus, do this for all people? Because He is fully God. He paid the price for all of humanity’s sins. Only Christ could bear the full weight of all the world’s sin on his shoulders.
You and I, we are sinful people.
The death Jesus suffered, the weight of the sins of the world on his shoulders.. that was for you and me.
A selfless act of love for God’s most important creation. Love in the form of one last and final sacrifice, so that we could be reconnected with the Father. In His death, Jesus selflessly showed his “love for his own who were in the world, loving them to the end.” (John 13:1)
If you want to receive this forgiveness, you can! “For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only son, that WHOEVER BELIEVES in Him, will not die, but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
If you believe in Jesus, you can be saved from your sins! You can say this to surrender your life and follow Him: “Jesus I believe in you. You are my savior, and you will be the Lord of my life.” You can stand in confidence that what Christ has done, was done for you and you will be saved!
Then you enter into a new journey of life, where you become a disciple, an apprentice of the Savior of the World.
But Jesus’ death isn’t the end of the story…
