Jesus’ ministry begins.

Chapter 23

Matthew 3-4, 11
Mark 1-3
Luke 8
John 1-4

Here’s where we find ourselves in the story right now: the long promised Savior, Jesus, is here! God has physically come to earth. He was born as a baby, grew up with his mom and earthly dad, and he was often found learning in the temple courts. As time passed and Jesus grew older, his ministry, or work on earth, began.

Pause and take the time to read John 4:1-26 right now. These verses are important!

You might be wondering, “Ok, why is this such a great story? Jesus talks to a random a woman at a well and reveals He is the savior. He’s going to do that a lot in his life.” If you’re thinking that, you are right. But when you look deeper at this story, the importance of what is happening is seen by looking at what Jesus communicated to the world!

Jesus has been called the Savior of the World multiple times in his life, most notably by John the Baptist. John baptized Jesus and the Holy Spirit descended on Him in the form of a dove. God then spoke in an audible voice saying, “This is my son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”  (Matthew 3:17)

This was a moment in history that caught the attention of a lot of people. People’s conversations inside the surrounding cities were buzzing. Who is this Jesus? But those who we most curious, watching closer than anyone else for what would happen next, were the religious elite. They knew the scriptures told of a savior coming, but to save who exactly? They thought only to save the Jews.

But then Jesus stops at the well. He’s tired from walking and is thirsty. It’s the middle of the day and the sun is hot, so he sits down. While Jesus is sitting at the well, a Samaritan Woman walks up and everyone’s view of the Kingdom of God changes.

Women were considered second class citizens in the time and place of this story. And Samaritans were the rivals of the Jewish people. This was a Samaritan Woman… a double negative. Someone like Jesus, a Jewish Man, would NOT talk to her.

But Jesus not only talks to her, He guides her, he loves her, and he offers her eternal life through him. And it is clear, this eternal life is not just for her, a Samaritan Woman, but for everyone! Jesus Says this: “But EVERYONE who drinks the water I give them will never thirst; the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to ETERNAL LIFE.” (John 4:14)

God’s son is saying this! He is the one that was affirmed in the river by God after baptism. He is the savior that the world has been waiting for!

The best part? Jesus said he wasn’t just for the Jews, but that he came to save EVERYONE on earth. Jesus was setting the stage very early on for his ministry. Everything he was going to teach and do next was for anyone and everyone who would believe in Him.

This is GOOD NEWS for you, for me, and for the world. No matter who you are, sin has infiltrated your life. That sin will lead to death apart from God. But through believing in Jesus Christ, your sins can be forgiven and you will receive Jesus’ spoken promise: Eternal Life.

Anyone…

Everyone…

Eternal life by believing in Jesus Christ!
